Anthony Hegarty designs for YOOX.com

Antony Hegarty for Yoox

Not satisfied with creating some of the most plangent and beautiful music of the last decade as Antony & The Johnsons….nor conducting out-of-this-world performances which leave audiences gasping for breath…nor showing up writers of long standing by concocting a terrific feature in The Guardian a few weeks back on photographer Peter Hujar…the amazing Antony Hegarty has now designed this stunning dress as part of a new venture with online boutique Yoox.com.

The dress will be auctioned on eBay on Valentine’s Day 08 with the proceeds going to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP), the US rights organisation for people to self-determine gender identity and expression regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.

Just one edition of the white silk jersey dress has been produced and is signed by Antony. The sleeves are short, the hems are unfinished, and the front is adorned with an elegant abstract design. Tunic shaped, the opening is at the rear and can be tied on both sides.

Antony Hegarty Dress

Antony’s fashion sensibilities are as acute and singular as his musicianship; once when THE LOOK met him he was dressed fantastically in a white ruff-collared shirt. Antony had elongated the sleeves with panels of white jersey attached by serried rows of safety pins. With his then-bleached tousled crop Boy George commented that he looked like “a debauched choir-boy” which just about summed it up.

We can’t wait for Antony’s new album The Crying Light.

Meantime, while we’re about Antony business, they’re a few years old but, if you haven’t seen them, please please please visit the artist Adam Shecter’s site for the three fabulous animated shorts which go with Antony & The Johnsons compositions The Lake, Mysteries Of Love and Hope There’s Someone.

Yoox will announce details of collaborations with other musicians soon.
